Messers J R Bailey and Johnny Northern were purveyors of some fine Big Apple soul in the 60s and the 45s on Wand by J B Troy were amongst their very best. Deep soul fans have been aware of these for many years and they are often cherished collectors pieces. Both Every Man Needs A Woman and I’m So Thankful are pretty raw. Troy was a singer of fine emotional impact and the material was good. Again unless you were looking at the 45s you wouldn’t think they were cut in New York, having the space and structure of contemporary releases from places like Memphis. Perhaps the lack of sales on these singles made sure that there were no more by him. What a pity.
